There are multiple types of cables that can charge an electric vehicle but not just “any” electrical cable can be used. Just like different types of charging stations, different cables can be used to deliver varying levels of power to an EV, and those mainly consist of Type 1 and Type 2 cables. Type 1 cables such as the J1772 and CCS are primarily used in the United States while Type 2 cables are primarily used in Europe. In addition to these cables which are often utilized by faster charging stations, each EV typically comes with a simple Level 1 slow charging cable which can connect to any standard 120V wall outlet in the United States.
